From one of my students, tips sent out to the district and school:

Tip #2

This will go along with what I discussed last week and that is the use of simplified language. Every ESL student has this marked in their PSP. Remember that reading is not comprehending. ELL students will often read something and then tell you that they understand, but they will not admit that they do not comprehend what they read. This idea of comprehension can be helped by using simplified language.

Try to avoid using academic language
be sure to pre-teach any new content vocabulary
many reading passages need to almost be cut in half, eliminate any extraneous details but leave the main ideas/big picture issues they need in order to comprehend and make any predictions or inferences
if the academic language is necessary then provide a brief and simple definition or synonym in parenthesis

ESL TIPS FOR MAINSTREAM TEACHERS

ELL students can often become lost in the shuffle in large classes.  Many times they are very quiet and will not advocate for themselves.  Therefore it is essential that they have constructive and quality interactions one-on-one with you each day in class.  I know this is difficult to do because there are always a million things happening at one time, and other students are often soaking up our time.  However this is an accommodation that is checked on most of the PSP’s of our ELL students.  Interaction opportunities can include some of the following:

  • checking for understanding after an assignment has been explained to the class
  • checking for understanding as they are working on an assignment
  • verbally clarifying key ideas in a lesson
  • using gestures as clues to understanding important vocabulary and concepts

As of the 2007-2008 school year, Kentucky’s schools were home to more than 12,900 English language learners (ELLs), which marks a 233% increase from the 1997-1998 school year (NCELA, 2010). The top five languages or language groups spoken by ELLs in Kentucky are Spanish, French, Pennsylvania Dutch, German, and Dutch (EPE, 2009).

Kentucky is a member of WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment), joining in 2006. WIDA is a consortium of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English language learners which offers states programming for identifying and annually assessing the English language development of its English learners.
